Re-Sizing Photos for Home Listings

The size that we suggest for photos to be uploaded onto ManufacturedHomesToday.com is 900 pixels wide by 600 pixels tall. Though the listings page viewing size is set at 300 pixels wide by 200 pixels tall, when a website visitor clicks to enlarge photos, the photos can enlarge to a full screen size, which is 900 pixels x 600 pixels. To show details of the home, it is best to upload photos at the largest setting.

For tall, narrow photos or short, wide photos, further steps must be taken to avoid distortion. If you upload a tall, narrow photo or a short, wide photo without following the procedure below, then the photo will become distorted as it is stretched to fit the 300 pixels x 200 pixels spot on the home listings page.

To resize a tall, narrow photo, so that it doesn’t stretch and look distorted, follow this simple procedure:

1. Go into your photo editing software (the example shown is from Photoshop) and open your photo file.

2. Find the Image Size. For example, this photo is 608 pixels wide by 900 pixels tall (make sure that your sizes are by pixels).

3. Select “Constrain Proportions” so that your photo will not be distorted.

4. Resize photo so that it is exactly 600 pixels tall, and the width will be set automatically, in this case to 405 pixels.

5. Then create a blank file, click File: New.

6. Set the image size at 900 pixels wide by 600 pixels tall (there should be a blank white background, as in the example. If not, find the option for a white background and select it.)

7. Go back to your original photo, select it, and copy it.

8.Switch to the new file and paste the selected photo it in. There will have white space on one side or white space on both sides, but the photo you pasted in should fit top to bottom in the new file you created.

9.Save this new photo as a jpg. Remember when saving your photos, do not save file names with spaces, symbols (!@#$%^&*+=?:;”<>’ {}[]~`/|\) or dashes (-). Only numbers, letters and underscores ( _ ) should be used in the file name. If you save with an incorrect name format, sometimes it will cause display or uploading problems.

10.Once saved, the photo is ready to be uploaded to the website.

To resize short, wide photos, follow the same procedure, only switch width and height in the directions. Make sure the width of the photo you will paste into the 900 pixels by 600 pixels blank file is also 900 pixels, and don't adjust the height when resizing.
